I decided the solution to this career conundrum was to conduct a social experiment Julie and Julia style...
The concept: To try as many different jobs as possible in the hope of finding something that is inspiring enough to turn into a career. Esentially I plan to become the biggest work experience kid in the world. And lets face it, even if I don’t find the perfect job (because frankly that very statement is an oxymoron!) it is an extremely productive use of my time and an interesting social experiment.
The aim: To get an insight into each profession through physically doing the job for a day. To gain new skills. To share my experiences with other people who might also have questions about their compatibility to a certain career.
The method: Approach businesses with the proposition of being their work experience kid for the day. On the assigned day, I will literally act as if I am a ‘insert job here’ for the day. I will attempt to learn what it takes to do that job and what a typical day in that job would be like. I will perform tasks associated with the job in an effort to gain insight into that potential career path. Where I am unable to find a person to do work experience with, I will self teach myself the skills from the internet and as best as possible recreate a day in that job role.
Potential job ideas: Florist, Brewer, Librarian, Press Photographer, Mechanic, Professional artist (pottery), Court Reporter, Travel Writer, Chocolate shop assistant, Stand up comedian, Cake Decorator, Baker, Dog Groomer, Real Estate Agent, Beautician, Butcher.
The conclusion: TBC

If anyone has any other ideas for jobs I could try out, post them here...
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Sanitation worker, stock broker, lawyer, chef, portrait photographer, TV reporter, cue card holder person... the possibilities are endless.
ReplyDeleteThanks banjo, will be heading off as a primary school field trip chaperone this week!!
ReplyDeleteHow about Riverdancer? After all it's in the genes.
ReplyDeleteLumberjacking would be challenging and fun
ReplyDeletePersonally, I can't wait for the stand-up comedian gig.
ReplyDeleteMy initial suggestions are:
- Chauffeur / taxi driver
- Cheese monger
- Postman
- Phone sex line worker
- Personal shopper
with the addition of a headset, Finlon's suggestion of phone sex line worker could, of course, be combined with housekeeper. Just a running commentary on the chores ("Now I'm turning down the bed...") would be a wow. Also how about combining the toilet roll origami skills learned while housekeeping with the previous floristry experience for some loo roll ikebana?
